On a recent trip to Rome, we returned to the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria for a few nights before flying back to Toronto. The rooms showed signs of wear and certain areas of the hotel did not feel as polished as during our first stay. Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria: Too Far From the City Center?
The Rome Cavalieri’s hilltop location near Vatican City provides incredible panoramic views, but it is not within walking distance of Rome’s main attractions. Travelers hoping to stroll to landmarks like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, or Piazza Navona will need to rely on the hotel shuttle, taxis, or ride-share services. The hotel shuttle we used was comfortable and uncrowded in the afternoon, though mornings can fill quickly, so advance reservations are recommended. Taxis or ride-shares typically take 15 to 20 minutes to reach central Rome.
If your priority is sightseeing on foot, the location will feel inconvenient. If you are seeking a quiet retreat with resort-style amenities and panoramic views, or a comfortable stop before or after a flight, the Rome Cavalieri is a practical choice.
Hotel Overview
The hotel is elegantly decorated with a large collection of artwork that gives it an old-world feel. Room views vary considerably. Some rooms look out over Rome, while others face a large communications tower, which is not an appealing sight. We were assigned a tower-facing room on this visit. During our previous stay we had a city-facing room, which was particularly good at night. The hotel is also home to La Pergola, a three Michelin star restaurant, and an event room on the top floor with sweeping views of the city.
Breakfast and Dining
As Hilton Diamond members, we enjoyed complimentary breakfast during our stay. The breakfast at this hotel is a true highlight, featuring an extensive selection of hot and cold items, including an impressive array of cheeses. It is served in the lower-level Uliveto Restaurant, and we opted to dine outdoors by the pool.
Dining at Waldorf properties tends to be expensive, and the Rome Cavalieri is no exception. On our previous visit we ate at the hotel for convenience. This time we ventured out and found a small local restaurant called Foodoo, which appeared to draw a steady crowd from the hotel. The food was excellent and worth seeking out if you are staying nearby.
Pool
The pool is a reasonable size and the setting is attractive, but during our visit it was crowded throughout the day. The hotel was fully booked, and it showed. If you are planning to use the pool, earlier mornings are a better bet than midday or afternoon
Rooms at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria
We booked two rooms: one King Deluxe and one with two Twin Beds. I couldn’t help but notice how much the hotel had deteriorated since our last visit. This may have been due to the timing of our previous stay, which was at the end of the pandemic when the hotel may not have been at full capacity. This time, the hotel was fully booked, and the rooms we received were in a state of disrepair, featuring stained carpets, worn furniture, and dirty linens.
Typically, such issues do not bother me; I have stayed in various accommodations and learned to adapt. However, I believe that a Waldorf property should maintain higher standards. I expected the carpets to be properly cleaned and the furniture to be well-maintained. Additionally, one of our rooms had leaking pipes, and resolving this issue proved to be more challenging than it should have been, suggesting this may be a recurring problem in those rooms.
Is It Worth Redeeming Hilton Honors Points?
Standard rooms at the Rome Cavalieri typically run around 105,000 Hilton Honors points per night, though award pricing can shift. Cash rates fluctuate significantly, so it is always worth comparing the two before booking. If you are considering topping up your balance ahead of a stay, check whether a Hilton Honors points purchase promotion is currently running before you pay full price for points.
When you factor in complimentary breakfast as a Gold or Diamond member, the resort amenities, and the hilltop setting, a points redemption here can represent reasonable value during periods of high cash rates. That said, the trade-offs are real. The location requires transport to reach most of Rome’s historic sites, and room condition is inconsistent. We would not call this a standout redemption, but if you are focused on relaxation over sightseeing it is a decent option.

The Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria is not the right base for exploring Rome on foot, but it delivers a resort-style experience with good views and strong breakfast for Hilton Diamond members. Our second stay was noticeably less polished than our first, and the room condition issues are worth knowing about before you book. If you are redeeming Hilton Honors points and prioritize amenities and a quiet setting over walkability, it remains a reasonable option.
