Crete has been on my list for a long time, and a recent trip finally gave us the chance to spend some time on the island. Our stop in Chania was meant to be brief, a one-night layover after a late flight from Copenhagen before heading further into Crete. We used Marriott Bonvoy points to book two rooms at Domes Zeen Chania Crete, a Luxury Collection Resort, thinking it would be a convenient place to land for the night. That turned out to be the wrong way to approach this property.

Getting There
Chania International Airport (CHQ) is a straightforward arrival point. Our flight from Copenhagen was easy, but picking up the rental car took longer than expected. Enterprise operates off-site with no signage at the terminal and minimal direction. After some wandering we called them and someone came to collect us. The island pace of life is relaxed, that much was clear immediately.
From the airport the resort is about 15 minutes by car, but arriving at night made it more complicated than it sounds. The entrance to Domes Zeen is down a narrow residential road with no prominent signage. We were double-checking the GPS the whole way in. You eventually pull into a gravel parking lot, which is a slightly unexpected first impression for a five-star property. Once we were out of the car and walking the stone pathways up toward the entrance, that faded quickly.
Check-In: A Warm Welcome
Check-in was seamless and personal. Despite our late-night arrival, the staff welcomed us warmly with a refreshing arrival drink. There was a hint of surprise when they realized we were only staying for one night, which is understandable, given that most guests at Domes Zeen settle in for several days to fully enjoy the resort’s amenities and tranquil setting.
Frankly, I couldn’t blame them for their reaction, this is not the kind of place designed for a quick overnight stay.
Booking with Marriott Bonvoy Points
We redeemed 95,000 Bonvoy points per room, per night. Cash rates during our stay were around €800 per night for the suite category, making it a reasonable redemption but not an exceptional one.
One thing worth knowing before you book: Domes Zeen has a stricter cancellation policy than most Marriott properties. Points bookings can require several weeks’ notice to cancel. Always check the terms carefully before confirming.
The Rooms: Spacious and Private
We reserved two Tropical Open Plan Suites, each featuring a private pool and a large terrace. The rooms were spacious and beautifully designed, blending indoor comfort with outdoor living.
Inside, the decor continued the resort’s earthy, modern theme. Floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto the terrace, connecting the space to the outdoors.
Our private pool, while modest in size, felt like a secluded oasis. It was hard not to feel like we were in our own personal retreat.
As a Titanium Elite member, I was pleasantly surprised to find a welcome gift waiting in the room. Welcome gifts are always a thoughtful touch that adds to the luxury experience.
Dining: A Taste of Crete
While our stay was brief, we made time for the included breakfast at the resort’s Beach House Restaurant, situated just above the pool area with sea views.
The breakfast spread was impressive and locally inspired. Fresh-baked pastries, Greek yogurt with honey, seasonal fruits, and a variety of savory options were on offer. Eggs made to order, along with rich Greek coffee, completed the experience. The open-air setting made for a peaceful start to the day.
Though we didn’t have time to sample dinner or lunch, the resort also features Gallina Restaurant, a fine-dining venue that focuses on Cretan cuisine. It’s another reason I’d love to return for a longer stay.
Pool and Beach
The main pool overlooks the sea with comfortable loungers and shaded areas. The private beach is small but calm. During our visit we had it entirely to ourselves, which was an unexpected bonus. I really wish we could have spent more time here soaking up the sun.
Location: Close to Chania, But Feels Worlds Away
The resort is about a 10-minute drive from Chania Old Town and offers a complimentary shuttle service, so having a car is not essential once you are checked in. Chania Old Town is worth exploring, the Venetian harbour, the narrow market streets, and a solid dining scene make it a good half-day or evening trip.
Final Thoughts: A Place Worth More Time
One night at Domes Zeen was enough to make it obvious we had not given the property a fair chance. The setting, the rooms, and the pace of the place are all built around a longer stay. If you are planning a trip to Crete, build in at least three or four nights here rather than treating it as a stopover. Even better if you can stretch it to five nights on points and take advantage of the Marriott Bonvoy fifth night free benefit.
The points redemption at 95,000 per night against €800 cash rates is solid, just not exceptional. The stronger argument for this property is simply the experience itself. I would return without hesitation.
